GSURU holds meetings on every Thursday
evenings. The first Thursday of the
month is a business meeting, with the other three nights devoted to training
and equipment maintenance.
With all that GSURU has done, the most
amazing part of our history is that it was all accomplished through the
generosity of private citizens. Our
organization subsists solely on donations and receives no Federal, State, or
county funding assistance of any type.
Our completely volunteer organization usually
consists of around 18 divers and 20 tenders and support personnel. Members come from all walks of life and
donate thousands of hours per year to provide water safety programs at schools,
fire companies, rescue squads and police departments, in an effort to prevent
needless deaths and injuries to both the public and public safety
personnel. Our organization has been
instrumental in developing national training standards and rescue programs
currently in use throughout the
We provide manpower and equipment for land
and water searches, as well as assistance at water related events throughout
GSURU also serves provides services for
various businesses, such as utility companies and testing facilities, which
have underwater tasks that need to be handled by certified divers. For this reason our divers also need to be
certified in confined space entry.
Our equipment consists of a large walk-in
rescue truck, a utility body air cascade unit and a four-wheel drive quick
response vehicle. Our boats include a
21-foot center console craft for use in the ocean and other large bodies of
water, two 18 foot general-purpose boats with jet prolusion motors, three
smaller boats for areas with limited access, and four jet skis which allow us
to quickly position assets anywhere they may be needed.
We have specialized equipment for ice
rescue, submerged vehicle recovery, criminal evidence handling, and drowning
victim recovery, and a underwater camera with 300-foot depth capabilities. In addition, we have a Side-Scan sonar unit
for searching locations which are too deep for normal diving operations. We also maintain full-face masks with voice
communication capabilities, and specialized dry suits for use in freezing or
contaminated water.
